Hadrian's Wall, Day 4, Twice Brewed to Wall

On Thursday 30 April we went down to breakfast after a great night's sleep at 08:00 and tucked into a full English. This was definitely our favourite B&B of the trip, even if the owner could have a job as Karl Pilkington's double. He looked just like him but he was a happy chappy.

About 09:00 we were dropped back to where we had left the wall. We felt cold but soon warmed up as the first thing we had to do was climb a big hill! This set the tone for the majority of the day.

We walked up hill and down dale right through to mid-afternoon but the views were just awesome. We had a bit of rain to start the day but we were pretty lucky as any rain and hail we had didn't last long. The only downside of the whole day was the strong chilly wind which was continuous.

We saw dramatic escarpments ...

... Milecastle ruins ...

... the Sycamore Gap ...

(This is one of the bits I had been most looking forward to seeing and was so disappointed that it was raining when we got here.

I walked very slowly away from it, up the hill, and was so pleased when the clouds parted and the sun came out that I actually said 'thank you' out loud to Mother Nature, who was so kind to us this week) ...

... fluffy cows ...

... miles of gorgeousness ...

... this farm with the most amazing views ...

... a huge bull standing right across the path (we gave him a wide berth) ...

... more miles of gorgeousness ...

... a stretch of wall that we could actually walk along ...

... cute lambs ...

... Carrawburgh Temple of Mithras ...

... stiles ...

... a couple of trig points ...

... more lambs ...

,,, and then sadly the wall ran out.

We stopped for our lunchtime flapjacks about 13:00 and ate them with the most fantastic view of the wall trailing off into the distance.

This was my favourite day of the whole trip because of the almost continuous 360 degree stunning views.

We arrived into the village of Wall about 18:00 and were met at our cottage.

We had our own self-contained cottage for the night which was great! It was beautifully furnished and had everything we could possibly need. Just brilliant!

About 20:00 we walked to The Hadrian Hotel just down the road and ate a hearty meal. The publicans were very friendly and efficient and a cute little Fell Terrier kept trying to escape from his owner's watchful eye so he could come and see us. He was a cheeky little chap and just as naughty as Barney! We got back to the cottage about 21:30 and turned in as we were all pretty shattered.
